The steps of texture scanning

Here you can see the individual steps of how scanning of a material sample works, whether you send us the sample (where we do all the steps except step 1) or you have the scanner built on site (where you do all the steps)

STEP 1

Prepare/Send Samples

If you have a scanner available then you would need to prepare the samples that you would like to scan. If you send the samples to us then you would need to pack the samples and send it to the corresponding scanner station address in the US or in Europe.

STEP 2

Place the Samples on the Table

Once you have the samples ready they would be placed on the table. Up to 36 samples can be placed on the table at once, making the scanner capable of scanning a huge throughput since, you would not have to place samples one-by-one and scanning them one-by-one but you can scan 36 samples at once.

STEP 3

Select the areas to scan

Once you placed the samples on the table you will have an easy overview of the samples that are available on the table, you can make individual selections and scan only the samples and areas that you need. Once you made your selection (just as before this can be just as high as 36 samples at once), you can just press start and the scanner will take care of everything.

STEP 4

Start the scanning

Once you have selected the areas to scan you can just simply press start and the scanning process will begin. You don't need to do anything all the samples that you have placed on the table will be scanned one after the other.

Step 5

STEP 5 (Optional)

Edit and tile the final textures

colormass offers a complete set of texture editing tools that you can use to tile and edit your materials.  This is only an optional step, you can also directly just download the scanned materials. The texture editor toolset allows an easy tiling and texture editing that would otherwise would be more involved with using programs like Substance Designer or Photoshop.

Frequently asked questions

Is the scanner limited to certain surfaces?
Chevron

No, the scanner can scan all types of surfaces: wood, fabric, tiles etc.

How long does the scanning take?
Chevron

You can start a scan of 36 samples at once, which can finish within 2-3 hours.

Do I need a special PC to scan?
Chevron

Because we compute all the reflection properties (fitting) in the cloud, nothing needs to run on your PC therefore you don't need a special PC to run it.
